Leyla Gencer Voice Competition

LEYLA GENCER VOICE COMPETITION
ISTANBUL
1995 - 2018

The first Leyla Gencer Voice Competition was realized in 1995 in Istanbul under the name Yapı Kredi International Leyla Gencer Voice Competition through Aydın Gün’s (her friend and the coordinator of Yapı Kredi Festival) initiative and organization. The competition was on a biennial schedule but its 3rd edition was postponed to 2000 because of the major earthquake in Turkey which occured in 1999. Since Yapı Kredi Bank who had given its name to the Leyla Gencer Voice Competition quit sponsoring, the competition couldn’t be realized until 2006. In 2006 Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts took over and organized the competition in collaboration with Accademia Teatro alla Scala and Borusan Sanat under the name of Leyla Gencer Voice Competition. The contestants such as Pretty Yende, Anita Rachvelishvili, Nino Machaidze, George Gagnidze, Enkelejda Shkosa and Marcello Álvarez are some of today’s most popular singers of the opera stages.

Organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV), Accademia Teatro alla Scala and Borusan Sanat, the competition is dedicated to the estimable memory of “La Diva Turca” Leyla Gencer and it was held under her patronage until she passed away in 2008.
