Zu Ehren von Leyla Gencer

Zum neunten Mal wird im kommenden Jahr der Leyla-Gencer-Gesangswettbewerb durchgeführt. Anmeldungen sind bis zum 10. April 2018 möglich. Die Vorausscheidungen finden in Mailand und Istanbul statt.

Da sie von den großen Schallplattenfirmen nahezu totgeschwiegen wurde, ist Leyla Gencer (1928 - 2008) bis heute ein Geheimtipp geblieben und fast nur Kennern und Liebhabern des Belcanto-Repertoires ein Begriff. Dabei war die Gencer die einzige (zumindest auf Liveaufnahmen dokumentierte) Sängerin, die es in der Kombination von Differenzierungsvermögen, Virtuosität und Ausdrucksintensität mit Maria Callas aufnehmen konnte. Dementsprechend gefragt war sie an den führenden Opernhäusern, über Jahrzehnte auch an der Mailänder Scala.

Zu ihren Ehren findet nun bereits zum neuten Mal der nach ihr benannte Gesangswettbewerb statt. Anmeldungen sind bis zum 10. April 2018 möglich, die Vorausscheidungen werden am 26. und 27. April in Mailand und am 5./6. Mai in Istanbul durchgeführt. In der türkischen Metropole finden dann von 23. bis 28. September die Finalrunden statt. Vorsitzender der Jury ist der italienische Starbariton Renato Bruson (81).

Leyla Gencer Voice Competition

The Leyla Gencer Voice Competition is dedicated to the estimable memory of “La Diva Turca” Leyla Gencer and it was held under her patronage until she passed away in 2008. The triennial competition is organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV), Borusan Sanat, and Accademia Teatro alla Scala. 40 contestants chosen in the preliminary auditions come to Istanbul in September for the final series.

The competition distinguishes for its international jury, which includes some of the most influential figures from different fields in the profession, as much as for its previous winners, who have subsequently launched on truly international careers. The competition's previous winners such as the South African soprano Pretty Yende, Georgian sopranos Nino Machaidze and Anita Rachvelishvili, Argentinean tenor Marcello Alvarez and Yugoslavian baritone Nikola Mijailovic are now counted amongst the brightest stars of the opera world. The Leyla Gencer Voice Competition is honoured to have Renato Bruson to preside the jury in its IX. edition.

In April the competition announced the Deutsche Oper Berlin Special Award, which offers a role in a production by the company, as well as the Royal Opera House Jette Parker Young Artists Programme Special Award, which gives the winner five coaching sessions along with an audition for the JPYAP.
