The following article is from a study on Turkish Pavilion in the Brussels Expo’58: Architectural Modernization in Turkey during the 1950s by Selda Balcı (February 2009)

The participation
program of Turkey included other activities so as to express itself in every
possible ways. Leyla Gencer and Doğan Onat, both from State Opera
in Ankara, made a debut at le Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie (Royal Theatre
of the Mint) at the night of May 3. Being the first Turkish actors to put on an
opera in Brussels, they performed Tosca by Giacomo Puccini. The Soprano
Leyla Gencer was the principal performer in the role of Floria Tosca,
and Doğan Onat starred as Mario Cavaradossi. Indeed, Gencer had already
become a well known artist.
After 1950, she gave
recitals to official quests after the request of the president Celal Bayar,
accepting her as a cultural attaché.309 It was in 1953 that Gencer went
on her first overseas journey to sing from that time on in various roles from
Rome, Naples, Lausanne, and Belgrade to San Francisco and Los Angeles.310
